After a very successful workshop in Napa last June, David Volkamer (my associate and partner in Landreth Workshops,) and I are scheduling more workshops for the coming months.  I'll be hosting a 2 day intensive seminar on my fine art imaging techniques in Seattle on August 20th and 21st.  You can find more information on the workshops at the Landreth Workshop website, or you can click Seattle Workshop to download the informational pdf.

 My Napa workshop was a great time, and I was very excited by the work done by the students in the class. We printed out everyone's work on a beautiful printer provided to us by Canon so everyone had prints to take home, evidence of the tremendous amount they all learned during the workshop.

Napa Valley Workshop is a reality!

For anyone interested in the techniques I use for my photographic art, this workshop is for you!  I'm sharing my techniques and inspiration at the intersection of wine and art:  Napa Valley, from June 6th thru June 10th.  The workshop is being held at the Clos Pegase Winery, known for it great wines and it's great art collections.. so it's a perfect place for a workshop like this!

Napa Valley... a workshop opportunity!

 At long last, and due to popular demand, I've put together a photo workshop for people interested in my layered textural look.  I recently scouted the Napa Valley area and secured a site to host the workshop.  I'm a firm believer in the pairing of wine and art so this will be the perfect launch for what I hope will be a series of photo workshops.  The area where I conduct the workshop is rich with photo opportunities and will provide the participants with lots of material to work with in the computer lab sessions.  My goal is to have everyone go home from this 5 day workshop with artwork they'll be proud to hang on their walls!  For a bit more information click on the link below.

The top two pictures are the old Bale Grist Mill, near Calistoga and the bottom image is, yup, more of those tangled tree images I love from a forest surrounding the grist mill.

I'm smitten by tree textures..

I love this time of year.  The tree limbs are all still bare with just a hint of new growth or buds beginning to appear.  With the right light, a still day and a small camera aperture I'm able to explore natures infinite designs and inherent textures as the branches stack up near to far.  The depths of the scene contract and the branches paint a JacksonPollock like canvas on my camera sensors...  I just love it.

More Birds

I think that the warm spring-like days we've had in the Northwest recently have kindled hopes for the end of winter and the beginning of spring,.. but hey, it's only mid-February!  While the notion of spring this early may be a false hope, it did provide the inspiration for this new image.

I've been working hard completing some recent assignment photography, organizing my new space and applying to lots of 2010 art shows, and when I get a moment, I turn to my image library to see what inspires me (and what can distract me).  This month is was birds.  I don't know why but they are so iconic, stately and mystical all at once.  Here are the results:

What? Another lighthouse!

Yup, I'm afraid it's true.  I got tired of doing necessary stuff (like bookkeeping) today so I dug this out of my archives.  The lighthouse and I spent about 6 hours in the computer together and this was the result!

At last, new work

Home from the road and the art fairs.  whew!  Now I've been digging in and working on my images, some old and some new.  Here's a few to share with you.

Sedona: Cathedral Rock.  We got there after the sun went down and all the photographers were leaving but I set up the camera anyway hoping for some drama and then magic happened.  I love that.

This is several images stitched together.  I've had the images in my library for years.  They kept telling me to do something with them and I finally listened.

It's hard to keep up with posting to this blog... I've been on the road to art shows in Bend, Oregon;  Jackson Hole, Wyoming;  Sacramento, California; and Sedona, Arizona these last few months.  Here's a couple of images I harvested along the way;

Salem Art Fair Completed.. Bellevue here I come!

The Salem Art Fair was a success. I was impressed by the wonderful setting and the management of the fair, and I'm looking forward to next years show. I was gratified with the attention some of my newer work received from the public. Most notable was the large panarama of the St. Petersburg shipyard which attracted a lot of viewers.

Finally, the trailer is packed with the booth and artwork, hooked up to my motorhome, and ready for the trip back home to prepare for the Bellevue Festival of the Arts show, July 24th thru the 26th.

New work for Salem Art Festival, 7/17 - 7/19

I've been super busy since returning Tuesday from a vacation/photo trip to Glacier National Park preparing new artwork for this Show. These are some new prints/images I hope to include in my booth at the Salem Art Festival in Salem Oregon next weekend.. the 17th thru the 19th. I love texture so I'm really excited about this new series of images. I created them from scenes of late fall trees (a huge amount of existing texture!) to which I've added/overlayed additional texture images. The results have tremendous detail and a depth and richness that I love.

Long overdue update and big changes!

Lot's of changes in a short amount of time have kept me fully occupied. After almost 20 years in my 5000 sq. ft. studio in Seattle, I've moved my studio and office operations to my home. Here are a few pics showing the transition of my new office... from an open rafters storage space in top floor of my 2 story detached garage.... to my new headquarters!

I did about 90% of the work myself in the last few months and I'm feeling liberated and invigorated with the change. Of course for any large commercial shoot I'll be renting out an appropriate stage to shoot in, but for my personal work I'll be shooting in the downstairs of my garage that is now set up as a small shooting space! So if you hadn't heard from me in a while and wondered what's up.... now you know.

La Quinta Art Festival = A Great Success!!

Thanks to everyone who came out and said "Hello" at the La Quinta Art Festival this year.  We had perfect weather, an amazing location and lots of friendly folks passing through.  I hope we see you again next year!!

Doug Landreth at Open Satellite in Bellevue!

Mark your calendars for another fantastic chance to see Doug's work in Washington State! Open Satellite is a fabulous gallery of contemporary art, located on the 1st floor of 989 elements. "elements," is a new developement of condos, restaurants and shopping centers which claims to be for "artful living". I actually haven't seen the development first hand, but reading about Open Satellite makes me think that this may be something pretty fantastic.

On Saturday Dec. 20th from 12-6pm, Doug will be at the gallery to shmooze and cruz around while you all get a chance to thumb through tons of loose prints, large and small, sip on wine and talk to The Artist...aka The Doug. This is just a one day event so don't miss out!!

Field of Poppies

Good Morning!

Did everyone "Fall Back" this weekend? I did and I'm having a bit of a hard time getting myself back up again!! I don't get it...any small adjustment to my sleeping schedule and I'm ready for a nap at 11am. esh.

That being said, I think that it's all too appropriate that Doug greeted me this morning with a fabulous new image of a field of poppies which he photographed while in Europe. Throughout history poppies have symbolized both imagination and eternal sleep. Lets hope these poppies represent Doug's eternal imagination and I'll keep my fingers crossed that my coffee kicks in soon.
